William Gibson is extremely thin. Shockingly thin.

He also looks like he’s missing his front teeth, although he isn’t. This is hard to describe.

William Gibson’s book tour is coming to Vroman’s in Pasadena tonight @ 7pm (thanks to Keith for the head’s up). I’m clearly living in the wrong place as he’s doing 4 signings in the Bay and only one near LA. I was shocked and dismayed to find I don’t even have a copy of Neuromancer or Count Zero anymore. No Burning Chrome either. And I found out my copy of Pattern Recognition is a second printing! Scandalous.

Looking back over my life, at times I really regret not having 75USD to spend on a very fine First of Neuromancer back in Ann Arbor in ‘97.

And at other times I wish I didn’t have that irrational collector strain in my makeup.

So of course the reason the ride in was so easy: it’s almost entirely a very slight downhill. If I remember my physics right, that means I had a lot of potential energy when I left the car. But it also means I had to do “work” to make up that potential energy on the way back. Ouch. Legs like lead the whole way. The incredible struggle to do something that should have been easy just reinforces my resolve to stop being completely weak and sedentary.

Today I rode my bike “to work”. At least, from the freeway to work, about 3miles. It’s a start.

The ride was actually too short, I didn’t really have a chance to get into a rhythm or get my heart pounding. So I’m looking for a bit of a longer “commute”. The morning air really felt great , and I felt like I was trucking along pretty good. It totally made me want to know how fast I was going though.

This reminds me that I need to get some pics of the machine up.
